Wildcats sweep Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY – Fresh off a franchise record four-win week the Elliot Lake Wildcats of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League have swept the latest installment of the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week.

Garnering the honours for the time frame concluding Nov. 30 are Wildcats goaltender A.J. Smith, defenceman Nathan Campbell and forward Shane Woolsey.

A.J. SMITH, (G) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – In two starts during the week that was the 20-year-old Smith, who hails from Southlake, Texas, allowed just one goal against in a pair of impressive victories.

He started with a solid 34-save 3-0 road shutout over the league-leading Soo Thunderbirds on Wednesday.

Smith followed that up by stopping 28 of 29 shots he faced in a hard fought 2-1 decision over the visiting Sudbury Nickel Barons Friday.

The Elliot Lake netminder currently sits second in the NOJHL in both goals-against average and save percentage at 2.54 and .925 respectively while also sharing the league-lead in shutouts with two.

SHANE WOOLSEY, (F) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – The 17-year-old rookie forward had goals in each of the Wildcats four triumphs last week, including a game-winner, to go along with an assist for a combined six-point week for his side.

The Iroquois, Ont., product began by setting up the winner and adding a later tally as Wildcats won in Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday.

Two nights later Woolsey supplied the difference maker in a 2-1 win on home ice against Sudbury.

From there he tacked on three more tallies as Elliot Lake skated to weekend road decisions at Mattawa and Blind River.

Nine of Woolsey’s 12 goals so far this season have been game-winners, which currently tops all skaters in the NOJHL.

NATHAN CAMPBELL, (D) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – Helping anchor Elliot Lake’s defensive corps while also contributing offensively, Campbell has been solid all season for the Wildcats.

Campbell, who played for Team NOJHL in the recently held Central Canada Cup Challenge in his hometown of Toronto, had five points for the Wildcats last week helping his club’s rise up the league standings.

In the four outings the 19-year-old blueliner scored twice and chipped in with three helpers to aid in his team’s multiple-win week.

His 22 points to date are the second most among league defencemen to date.

In this their first season in the NOJHL the Wildcats have impressed currently sitting with the third best overall record in the nine-team league having amassed 34 points with a 16-6-1-1 mark.
