Wildcats claw past Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats broke open a close one-goal game by notching four unanswered markers in the third period to defeat the Soo Eagles 6-1 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League at Pullar Stadium.

The Eagles did get on the board first as Jacob Hernandez picked up his fourth of the campaign at 12:08 of the opening session.

Elliot Lake battled back to tie it late in the frame as Ty Hannaford scored with just 18 seconds left in the stanza.

The Wildcats went in front with the only goal in the middle period when Connor Rider connected with 1:22 to go.

Elliot Lake then came out and put the game away in the third starting with consecutive tallies by Cole Hepler before the frame was five minutes old.

Spencer MacLean then tacked on two more for the Wildcats to round out the scoring on the night as he collected markers 13 and 14 on the season to go with an earlier assist.

Chad Lopez dished out three helpers to aid the winners cause while Hepler and Artur Terchiyev had a pair of assists each.

Al Rogers made 20 stops to register the win for the Wildcats.

Cam Bruggrabe faced 48 shots in defeat for the Eagles.
