Thunderbirds tame Wildcats with 6-1 victory

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Lucas Theriault produced his second four-point game of the season to help the Soo Thunderbirds stop the Elliot Lake Wildcats 6-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday at John Rhodes Community Centre.

The hometown Thunderbirds set the tone with a solid first frame where they picked up tallies from Tyler Malpass at even strength and Kaidan McDonald on the power play to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Two more markers were supplied by Sault Ste. Marie in the middle stanza as they upped the cushion to four after two periods of play.

Both of those efforts were provided during man advantages as Steven Bellini and Theriault connected with the Thunderbirds up a skater.

Theriualt then helped set-up Noah Boman 30 seconds into the third to put the Soo up five.

Elliot Lake would dash Thunderbirds’ goaltender Colin Ahern’s shutout bid at 9:02 as he picked up his initial NOJHL goal.

From there though, Avery Rebek wrapped up the scoring as his second of the campaign sealed the decision for the Soo at 17:27.

Bellini had a pair of helpers to go with his tally for a three-point night.

The chippy affair saw the Thunderbirds out shot the Wildcats by a 44-25 margin with Ahern picking up the win while Greg Moon suffered the setback as the Soo improved to 3-0 on the season.
