Rock’s Seguin; Thunderbirds’ Bazarin; Wildcats’ Taylor named Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Derek Seguin of the Timmins Rock, Matthew Bazarin of the Soo Thunderbirds and Connor Taylor from the Elliot Lake Wildcats have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week, for the period ending Oct. 28.

DEREK SEGUIN, (F) TIMMINS ROCK – On a torrid pace, Seguin scored in each of the Rock’s three road games over the weekend and amassed eight points in total helping Timmins vault into top spot in the NOJHL’s East Division and first overall.

The 18-year-old South Porcupine, Ont., product began his run by picking up a hat trick, including game-winner, and adding an assist in win at Blind River Friday.

Saturday saw him score once more and set-up two others as Timmins was victorious at the Soo Eagles before capping off his run with a tally in a close setback against the Soo Thunderbirds.

With goals in four straight match-ups, Seguin now leads all league skaters in markers with 15 and has soared to third in overall offensive production with 26 points.

He has also picked up at least one point in all but four of the Rock’s first 19 games in 2018-19.

MATTHEW BAZARIN, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – A trio of victories by the Thunderbirds, which aided in the club increasing their NOJHL-best winning percentage to .813, saw Bazarin play a significant role in each of them.

The 18-year-old, who hails from Roseneath, Ont., began by tallying twice then setting up the game-winner as Sault Ste. Marie won at Rayside-Balfour on Thursday.

Up next, Bazarin picked up another marker and an assist in a home ice triumph vs. Hearst on Saturday before helping set-up the decider in Sunday afternoon’s narrow matinee decision against Timmins.

Since joining the Soo earlier this month, Bazarin has produced at a point-per-game pace with nine in as many contests, on three goals and a half dozen helpers.

CONNOR TAYLOR, (F) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – Taking to the ice twice last week the 19-year-old from the Illinois community of Pekin, picked up points in both of them helping Elliot Lake earn a pair of victories.

Taylor began by notching the game-tying tally to go with an earlier assist as the Wildcats edged visiting Rayside-Balfour at Centennial Arena on Saturday.

He then supplied another helper Sunday afternoon in his club’s narrow 2-1 triumph at Espanola.

With assists and points in three straight outings as well as etching his name on the score sheet in five of his previous six contests, Taylor has been a point-per-game player for Elliot Lake so far this season with 19 in as many games.

His 12 goals to date are the fourth-most in league play entering action this week and he is tied for fifth in game-winning markers with two.
