NOJHL announces its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Cochrane Crunch forward Braden Cross,  Elliot Lake Wildcats goaltender Matt Kostiw and Soo Thunderbirds forward Matt Caruso have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Oct. 2.

BRAEDEN CROSS, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – Taking to the ice twice last week the 20-year-old Sechelt, B.C. native racked up an impressive eight points in a pair of Cochrane victories.

Cross started off this past Wednesday by scoring twice and helping set-up two others as the Crunch skated to road win at Timmins.

One night later on home ice the Cochrane forward supplied two more tallies and a pair of helpers in a victory over visiting Kirkland Lake at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Cross currently leads the NOJHL in goals, assists and points with 10, 12 & 22 respectively.

He was also named the league’s Gongshow Gear player of the month for September.

MATT KOSTIW, (G) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – In two starts for the Wildcats last week the 20-year-old netminder from Aurora, Ont., posted wins in both of them helping Elliot Lake pick up four points in the NOJHL standings.

Friday evening Kostiw stopped 27 of the 28 shots fired his way as the Wildcats defeated West Division rival Rayside-Balfour.

Then Sunday afternoon he made another 36 saves helping his side earn a road win at Espanola.

In just under 120 minutes of playing time last week Kostiw sported a 2.02 goals-against average along with a .940 save percentage in those two triumphs.

MATT CARUSO, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Another eight-point man in the NOJHL during the week was Caruso of the Thunderbirds.

Skating for his hometown side in Sault Ste. Marie, the 19-year-old Caruso began his week by notching a pair of markers and aiding in another in a triumph over the rival Soo Eagles Friday night at Essar Centre.

Saturday evening he added an assist in a setback to the same Eagles in a contest held at Pullar Stadium.

Caruso then capped off his week with a two-goal, two-assist performance Sunday as he played a role in all four goals the T-Birds scored in a decision over visiting Blind River.

Currently riding a five-game point streak, Caruso leads the Thunderbirds in offensive production overall with 18 points, including seven tallies.

He is also sitting second in overall league scoring.
