Former Elliot Lake coach Hewitt joins University of Waterloo men’s hockey staff

SUDBURY, Ont. – It was announced earlier this week that former Elliot Lake Wildcats head coach Nathan Hewitt has been named associate coach at the University of Waterloo joining the Warriors men’s hockey program.

In joining Waterloo, Hewitt becomes the first full-time assistant coach in school history.

While guiding Elliot Lake the past two seasons, Hewitt led the Wildcats to an impressive 73-23-6-4 overall record in 106 games.

“We at the NOJHL continually see many of those associated with our league; be it players, coaches, officials and team staff members, make the move on to the next level,” offered Commissioner Robert Mazzuca.

“Nathan’s success, along with the efforts of all those involved with the Elliot Lake Wildcats organization is a testament to the ever-growing attention the NOJHL continues to receive on both sides of the border,” added Mazzuca.

Hewitt joins a Waterloo program that finished tied for third in the ultra-competitive 10-school OUA West conference last season going 16-11-1 overall.

“We spent some time mapping out our ideal candidate, and extreme work ethic and determination was non-negotiable,” stated Waterloo head coach Brian Bourque in the announcement of Hewitt’s hiring.

“Nathan is an extremely committed, hard-working person,” added the Warriors bench boss. “When we did our hockey-specific questions in the interview, you could tell he (Hewitt) had been a head coach. He’s also played at the CIS level, he has a degree (Nipissing), and we thought that was very important at this institution.”
