Elliot Lake hands Blind River 1st loss

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats got two goals from Nick Long to help them defeat the Blind River Beavers 5-2 Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Centennial Arena.

Blind River did open the scoring 1:43 into the contest on a Tyler Somers effort.

Elliot Lake countered however with markers from Liam Sweeney and Long later in the session to put the home side up 2-1 through 20 minutes.

The Beavers tied it 5:20 into the second on a Max Khull marker, but once again the Wildcats responded with tallies from Quinn Robelle, via the power play, and Shane Woolsey, at even strength, as Elliot Lake took a 4-2 cushion into the third.

In the final frame, it was tight-checking before Long iced it with an empty netter with 65 seconds to go.

Curtis Rawn dished out two assists for Elliot Lake while Yanni Liarakos did likewise for the visitors.

Shots on goal favoured the Beavers 33-30 with Justin Richer picking up the victory.

Wes Werner suffered the loss for Blind River giving up four on 13 shots 32 and a half minutes of work.

Myles Hektor came in and stopped all 16 he saw in relief.
