Elliot Lake ends Espanola’s unbeaten streak at 4

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats got a pair of goals, including the game-winner, courtesy of Ty Hannaford to help them double up the Espanola Express 6-3 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Espanola did get off to a good start in this one, notching the lone tally of the first period as Cory Ellerton picked up his first of the season at 4:28.

Elliot Lake responded in the second by striking three times on markers from David Elford, Ryan Magee and Hannaford to go up 3-1 with under four minutes left in the middle stanza.

Aaron Roschinsky’s sixth pulled the Express to within one at 18:37 to make it a 3-2 game after two.

It took Hannaford 60 seconds into the third to supply the eventual difference maker as the Wildcats again went up by a pair.

Patrick Smith narrowed the margin to one once again at 2:32 with his team-leading 12th point for Espanola however tallies 36 seconds apart midway through the stanza iced it for Elliot Lake as Brett Crook and Liam Sweeney both added their second goals of the season to round out the afternoon’s scoring.

Damian Figueira, Troy Button and Brett Jacklin each dished out two assists apiece to aid the Wildcats offensive cause.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Elliot Lake by a 59-39 margin with Matt Kostiw picking up the win and Logan Sawka the loss as the Express unbeaten run ended at four games.
