Timmins tops Elliot Lake 4-3

TIMMINS, Ont. – A Wayne Mathieu power play goal with 2:20 remaining in regulation was the difference as the Timmins Rock topped the Elliot Lake Wildcats 4-3 Saturday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at McIntyre Arena.

Jared Hester staked the Rock to an early lead as he scored 90 seconds into the contest.

Elliot Lake countered with the equalizer four minutes later however as Evan Spencer struck shorthanded to tie things up.

Timmins went back in front just 43 seconds later on a Cole Gilligan effort as he notched his 22nd of the season.

Action in the middle stanza saw the Wildcats knot the affair at 2-2 at 8:35 compliments of Ty Hannaford and then went in front two minutes after that when Jacob Kelly scored on an Elliot Lake man advantage opportunity.

The back and forth game saw the Rock draw level thanks to a power play marker of their own at 15:18 when Jordan Rendle picked up his 29th of the campaign.

The score stayed that way until the latter stages of regulation when Timmins got the decider from Mathieu as he supplied the winner with his team up a man while registering his 25th tally of 2016-17.

Al Rogers made 23 saves to record the victory for the Rock.

Justin Richer faced 44 shots in defeat for the Wildcats.
